Things changed for the better when a new head coach took over in 1971. He made several changes to the team and dramatically reshaped it. He steered them to nine victories that were a record by a Washington team in almost 30 years. In 1981 a new coach was called on board to help improve the team’s passing game. The team showed immense improvement and marked ten victories, eight playoff appearances and another three Super Bowl titles. Gibbs marked his first victory post 1982 season against one of the toughest defense’s. They beat their opponents 27-17 in the Super Bowl. They reigned in the NFC all through the mid 1980s until an unfortunate injury sustained by Theismann that forced him into early retirement. Still the team’s defense emerged as an impressive defense ever and owing to this defense the team posted a record season of 11-4 and defeated opponents, the Denver Broncos at a score of 42-10 in the Super Bowl. But the best was yet to come when an all time best defense unit of the NFL history was arranged in 1991 by the team’s coach. Star players namely Rypien, Byne, Gary Clark and Art Monk were included. They defeated the Buffalo Bills at 37-24 in the Super Bowl and post 1992 season Gibbs departed and Richie Petitbone was appointed as the new head coach. But the replacement did not last long and was replaced by Norv Turner. Under his leadership the team was one of the weaker teams during the mid and late 1990s.
