The Washington Nationals is a Major League Baseball franchise that is situated in Washington, D.C. The team is popularly known by its nickname, The Nats. This team was initially playing in Montreal as the Montreal Expos in the 2005 season. When the Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers after their move to Dallas, they recorded a first ever relocation of its kind in the Major League Baseball. The franchise holds the honor of being the Washington's first after the National League in 1899. It was owned by Major League Baseball for the duration of four years ranging from 2002-2006. The ownership of the team was changed in 2006 and Stan Kasten became its president. The names "Senators" and "Nationals” were used alternately and it was not until the 1956 season that it was officially changed to the Senators and also appeared on their shirts. The senators make the Washington Nationals of today.
They have also played as a member of the Eastern Division. They currently play at the DC United's venue which is expected to change in the spring of 2008. The most likely prospective venue is a ballpark situated near the Anacostia River. The Nationals recorded their first ever victory against the Phillies in 2005 at a score of 7-3. Their first ever season win also came in the same month. The highlight of the match was the attendance of president George W. Bush who as tradition would have it threw the opening ceremonial pitch. The tradition has been carried on since William Howard threw the first ever ceremonial pitch almost 95 years ago.
The first ever grand slam by a National’s player was hit in 2005. Brad Wilkerson was the proud holder of this record and secured it against pitcher, Duaner Sanchez. The Nationals emerged victorious in this game at a score of 7-0.
The attendance of the Nationals' midseason increased in result of the surprising play of the team during the first half. The final attendance for that season exceeded the team’s combined attendance of the past three seasons. In fact it went down in history as the game that held the second largest audience ever in a baseball game. The attendance recorded on the Father's Day in 2006 amounted to 45,157 spectators. The game was played between the Nationals and the New York Yankees and was won by the Nationals. The Yankees lost at a score of 2-3.
The Nationals won the first ever day-night doubleheader that that they played in, held in 2006. They made an impressive sweep against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was a very thrilling match and the Nationals emerged victorious at a score of 5-2. According to a recent estimate made by Forbes the Nationals was the sixth most valuable franchise in Major League Baseball at a value of $440 million in the year 2006.
The Orioles franchise handles the Television and radio broadcasting rights of the Washington Nationals team. The formation of Mid-Atlantic Sports Network was made for the distribution of the games for the local affiliates and also for the satellite systems.
