1970-now, Vancouver Canucks; [NHL]
Thomas Scallen, Lyman Walters and their partners were the founders of the Vancouver Canucks. The Vancouver Canucks was founded in 1970 as an expansion franchise of the National Hockey League. Hockey has long been a part of the Vancouver heritage. This is evident from the fact that the Vancouver Millionaries of the Pacific Coast Hockey League won the Stanley Cup in 1915. Norman “Bud” Poile was the Vancouver Canucks’ first general manager. He drafted former National Hockey League defenseman Hal Laycoe as the team’s first coach. The Vancouver Canucks played and lost their first game to the Los Angeles Kings in fall of 1970. The Vancouver Canucks struggled over the next few years with intermittent playoff appearances.
They made it to their first postseason appearance in the 1975 playoffs against the dreaded Montreal Canadians. The Montreal Canadians had defeated the Vancouver Canucks of the next regular season as well as the first round.
Despite sacking a number of coaches including Bill McCreary, Phil Maloney, Orland Kurtenbach and Harry Neale, the Vancouver Canucks continued to struggle in and out of the post seasons usually losing in the first round. The team lost four straight games to the New York Islanders in the 1981-82 season. This trend continued till the 1986-87 season when the Vancouver Canucks experienced they first turn around after hiring Pat Quinn as president and general manager. The Vancouver Canucks drafted Soviet hockey star Igor Larianov and along with his young and upcoming aid Pavel Bure. Bure played for the Vancouver Canucks in the 1991-92 season and beat captain Trevor Linden’s record of goals by a rookie by scoring 34 goals earning him the nickname the “Russian Rocket.”
The Vancouver Canucks finished first in the Smythe division with Bure winning the Calder Trophy and Pat Quinn taking coaching duties and Jack Adams winning the best coach award of the National Hockey League. In postseason play the team defeated the Winnipeg Jets before losing the Edmonton Oilers. The Vancouver Canucks continued to build a strong team by drafting various players including Bertuzzi, Jovanovski, Ohlund, and Naslund. The next two seasons saw the Canucks finish out of the postseason. They utilized their high draft picks and trades to acquire the legendary Sedin twins and experienced goalie, Dan Cloutier. The 2000-01 came with a blow for the Vancouver Canucks since Mark Messier moved back to the New York Rangers marking the end of his career of the West Coast. Despite losing Messier, the Vancouver Canucks’ performance continued to improve and they finished 90 points by taking on the Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the playoffs. Although the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Vancouver
Canucks in four straight games, the series was a close call resulting in aggressive team development efforts. The 2000-01 season saw Dan Cloutier emerge as the first number one goalie in Vancouver as he took over from Felix Potvin. This was one of the best seasons of the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League.
