Leafs History

1926-now, Toronto Maple Leafs; [NHL]
1919-1926, Toronto St. Patricks; [NHL]
1917-1919, Toronto Arenas; [NHL]

The Toronto Maple Leafs was founded as the Toronto Arenas by lawyer Eddie Livingstone and replaced the Quebec Bulldogs as one of the four teams in the then new National Hockey League formed in November 1917. The Toronto Arenas played their first game in December 1971. Despite an amazing first season Stanley Cup Victory, the Toronto Arenas struggled until 1919 when it became the Toronto St. Patricks. By 1922, the Toronto St. Patricks was considered to be a team with a bright future. The St. Patricks claimed their second Stanely Cup victory by defeating Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Canucks. In 1927 a company led by Conn Smythe and Hugh Aird purchased the team and renamed them as the Toronto Maple Leafs. The foundation of the Maple Leaf Gardens, where the Toronto Maple Leafs would play in the 1931-32 season, was laid the same year.

The Toronto Maple Leafs once again made it to the Stanley Cup finals in the 1960 which they lost to the Montreal Canadians. The team, however, revived history by claiming the Stanley Cup championship by the Chicago Black Hawks in 1962. This was the beginning of the era of Toronto Maple Leafs since the team went to win three straight Stanley Cup championships after defeating Detroit Red Wings in 1963 and 1964, and the Montreal Canadians in 1967 taking a record total of four in a decade (i.e. 1960s). Harold Ballard took over the team from its current management and it thrived under his leadership despite the fact that he was charged with tax evasion and spent over a year in jail. Although their performance at that time was in no way comparable to that is the 1940s or 1960s the Toronto Maple Leafs played a competitive game.

The team earned a record in the 1976-77 season game against the Boston Bruins when Darryl Sittler scored 10 points in one game making a National Hockey League record. The late 1970s was an uncertain time for the team since Ballard fired Red Kelley, hired Roger Nielson, fired him and hired him back, and once again fired him along with Bob Davidson in less than a month. The teamís next remarkable season was the 2002 when they took on the young and energetic New York Islanders team in a rough seven game series. In the second round they faced their arch rivals the Ottawa Senators winning a seven game set. However, their lucky streak ended when they were defeated by the Carolina Hurricanes in a six game series.

By 2002 Pat Quinn had taken over as general manager and coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs and was in control of hockey operations. The team was, however, unable to re-sign free agent star goalie Curtis Joseph as he had already been signed by the Red Wings. The team tried to make up for this loss by quickly hiring Eddie Belfour. The strategy proved to be useful and their performance was above average in the season. They, however, lost the playoffs the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round.
