They are the only non-US team that has the honor of holding the World Series title one time. They are a member of the Eastern Division of the American League. They celebrated their 30th season in 2006. Toronto had been home to the International League for a long time right up until 1967. After the relocation of the Montreal Expos to Washington DC in 2004, the Toronto Blue Jays are the only MLB franchise member outside of America. They are the Major League baseball team operating outside of the United States. The formation of the Toronto Blue Jays took place in 1976 when it was short listed as one of the two teams that were to join the American League for the following season. The other team was the Seattle Mariners. After that the Toronto Blue Jays had been mentioned as a potential major league teams many times. It was at its worst in the years 1978 and 1979. Although one of its players named Alfredo Griffin was named as the American League co-Rookie of the Year, as a team the Blue Jays lost more than 100 games in just those two short seasons. In 1980 Bobby Mattick assumed the post of manager of the team. They finished last place in the American League in both the halves, in the two consecutive seasons of 1981. However things changed in 1982. Though they lost again but they emerged as a competent team that made a solid start in the season. Several young players were included in the team. They recorded their first ever success in 1983 when they won at 89-73. In that season they finished in the fourth place. And the eventual champions of that year were only 9 games ahead of them. In 1984 they finished in the second place in the World Series. In 1986 their right fielder Jesse Barfield had an awesome season and hit more than 40 home runs, but the team failed to repeat its earlier performance. They had a thrilling division race with the Detroit Tigers but lost by two games in 1987. They finished with an overall record of 96-66 record. Their player was named MVP of the American League. They had a tie with the Milwaukee Brewers for third position in the division in the 1988 season. Their players performed exceptionally well and their first baseman had 34 home runs for that season under his belt. They played at the Rogers Centre in the season of 2006. The catcher Jason Phillips was signed by Ricciardi for a minor league contract. He was in competition with another player for the role of the Blue Jays' backup catcher. Later on he was acquired by the Seattle Mariners. He started on the team after the regular catcher’s injury. The Blue Jays made several other changes that included the change of their pitcher and the movement of their first baseman. They managed 87 wins and ended up second in the division in 2006.
