Founded: 1961 Location: Arlington, Texas Stadium: Ameriquest Field Conference: American League Division: West Division Texas Rangers World Series Title: 0 Texas Rangers NL Championships: 0 Rangers History 1972- now, Texas Rangers 1961-1972, Washington Senators All Texas Rangers Players David Dellucci Michael Young Mark Teixeira Hank Blalock Alfonso Soriano Kevin Mench Laynce Nix Gary Matthews Rod Barajas The Texas Rangers are a Major League Baseball team and are located in Texas. They are a member of the Western Division of the American League. The idea of the inclusion of the professional baseball teams to the area of Dallas was proposed by the American League. An attempt to move the Kansas City Athletics was made but the idea was dismissed by the other teams. The Turnpike Stadium that seated around 10 000 spectators was initially built for the minor-league in 1964. Afterwards it was officially named the Arlington Stadium that served as the first ever home stadium for the Rangers. The name of the team was changed to the Texas Rangers after an official announcement by Bob Short. They played their first match with their new identity in 1972, and lost to the California Angels. The recorded their first win the following day by outdoing the Angels at an impressive score of 5-1. Ted Williams retired at the end of the season, his replacement Whitey Herzog was later succeeded by Billy Martin in the mid of the 1973 season. It was not until 1974 when the Rangers first appeared as a competitive team. They were runner ups for the World Series championship and finished with their season best. The Rangers of the year 74 are still the only baseball team that had an average of more than .500 even after they faced 100 losses. They also bagged the awards for the American League Rookie of the year, the Manager of the Year, the most Valuable Player of the year and the comeback player of the year. The Rangers had an excellent season from 1977-1979 and were very close to making a spot in the final playoff in 1981 but lost the game before the strike. After this particular match it was as if the Rangers were jinxed and could not manage a single victory for the upcoming five seasons. It was during this time period that they committed their most regrettable trade ever. They traded their multi-Gold Glove catcher in return for Ned Yost, who served them as their manager in the later years. They marked history in 1974 by carrying four catchers in their team for a whole season at the same time. The four catchers all alternated time amongst one another for play. Kevin Kennedy headed the team in 1993 as their manager and led them the first ever prospective berth in the mid of September since 1974. Kenny Rogers entertained the crowd with a sensational game in the 1994 season. The following year saw a promising future for the Rangers under the management of Johnny Oates. He headed the team into winning the American League Western division title in the same year. It was the first ever major win for the Rangers in their 24 years history in Texas. They won the first game but lost out the others to the New York Yankees. But 2006 season proved to be yet another disappointing year as the Rangers finished second last in the AL West division and made a very disappointing score of 80-82.
