Founded: 1976 Location: Tampa, Florida Stadium: Raymond James Stadium Conference: NFC South 1976- now, Tampa Bay Buccaneers; NFL The Tampa Bay Buccaneers is a professional football team that is amongst the five teams that play for the Central Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). According to the league’s realignment plan, which took affect in 2002, the Buccaneers now play in the Southern Division of the NFC. They play at the Raymond James Stadium in Florida in their red, silver and white colored uniforms. They were included in the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team. The responsibility of coaching the team was given to the former head coach for the University of Southern California, but the team did not have an impressive debut season. The team went along to become the first team ever in NFL history who lost 14 regular season games. Further they experienced five shutouts and fielded the worst ever offensive and defensive lines. Their losing streak continued and they reached a record 26 consecutive losses after the team lost the initial 12 games in its second season. However things improved for the better towards the late 70’s. They won several games owing to the tremendous performances of its team members namely Bell, Davis, Williams, Roy and Selmon. They won five consecutive games in 1979 to tie with the Chicago Bears in the Central Division. It was a team effort but William and Bell had exceptional individual seasons too. Their coach of that time, McKay was awarded the title of the coach of the year. They defeated the Philadelphia Eagles but eventually lost to the Los Angeles Rams who are the current St. Louis Rams. Several of its players faced injury in the 1980 season, but despite that they managed to qualify for the playoffs in 1981 and 1982 owing to their quarterback who was the best quarterback in the entire NFC. Unfortunately they lost in the first rounds on both the occasions. They won the season with a 5-4 winning record. Several defeats were in store for them post 1982 season. This losing streak continued till the mid 90’s when they were ranked amongst NFL’s worst teams. Tony Dungy was hired for the job of the head coach in 1996. He made a strong contribution to the teams’ revival and included several talented young players namely Alstott, Dunn, Dilfer and Abraham. The start of 1997 brought five straight wins for the team and they finished with a season record of 10-6 and a placement in the playoffs that came after a long fifteen years. They defeated the Lions in the first round but lost to the Packers, who were the ultimate NFC champion for that season. They reached the NFC Championship game for the very first time after a twenty year gap but unfortunately lost to the Rams.
