Rams History

1994- now, St. Louis Rams; NFL
1946-1994, Los Angeles Rams; NFL
1937-1945, Cleveland Rams; NFL

The St. Louis Rams is a professional football team that is amongst the five teams that are included in the Western Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). They were situated in Cleveland, Ohio, and Los Angeles until recently whereas they currently play at the Edward Jones Dome in Missouri wearing royal blue, gold and white colored uniforms. They were a powerful squad through the 1940s to the 1950s. They have bagged one NFL championship and six Western Division titles to date. They made a comeback the following year but were defeated by the New England Patriots owing to a last second field goal. They were established in 1936 as a member of the American Football League that was later on merged with the NFL. They were relocated repeatedly and played in several stadiums.

In spite of their previous season successes their franchise did not yield any profit. Post season they were relocated to Los Angeles where they bagged three consecutive seasons and finally the NFL crown in 1951 against opponents Cleveland Browns at a score of 24-17. Van Brocklin threw the winning pass.

They made it to their next conference title in 1955 and then in 1967. George Allen was appointed as the head coach in 1966. He included several stars in his squad namely Haden, Mack, Reynolds and Youngblood to name a few. Allen was replaced by Ray Malavasi after twelve years. He helped guide the team to another two division titles in 1978 and 1979, bringing the teamsí total to a straight seven. Unfortunately they were defeated in the NFC Championship Game by the in the 1978 season and in the 1979 Super Bowl by the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers respectively.

They were led to four straight playoff appearances from 1983-1986 by Dickerson. He also broke the rushing record with a whooping 1,808 yards in the following year. Later their head coach, John Robinson was named as the NFC coach of the year in 1983. In the following year Dickerson was named as the player of the year when he won his second rookie rushing title with more than two thousand yards. He won his third rushing title in the year 1986 when he rushed more than 1,800 yards.

Things were on a positive note for the team when they earned a wild card playoff berth with the help of its players Jim Everett and Henry Ellard. Both of the mentioned players had lead positions in their respective yardage in that year.

Their quarterback for that year was awarded with the title of being the NFL player of the year after he threw an impressive 41 touchdowns. In the Super Bowl that followed the Rams bagged a victory against the Tennessee Titans at a winning record of 23-16. They went 14-2 in the 2001 season and made a return to the Super Bowl where they were eventually defeated by the New England Patriots.
