The St. Louis Cardinals is a Major League Baseball team situated in St. Louis, USA. They are the members of the Central Division and have the most number of World Series championship titles under their belt in the National League (NL). And as far as the World Series championships wins are concerned they are preceded by the New York Yankees.

The formation of the team took place in 1882 as a part of the American Association. Originally they were called the Brown Stockings after an antecedent team of the city, which was named Stockings as in inspiration of the success of the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The team was soon nicknamed the Browns.

After the American Association went bankrupt in 1892 the Browns became a member of the National League. Before being called the St. Louis Cardinals they were known as the Perfectos for a short time in 1899. The inspiration behind the name came from the switch of the teamís uniform from color from brown to the color red. Since a "Reds" team already existed they became the cardinals. The owner of the team switched several players in 1899. He owned another team named the Cleveland Spiders from which he transferred a lot of players to the St. Louis franchise. This led to the unfortunate perish of the Cleveland Spiders. After the color brown was given up by the team, it was taken on by the American League franchise.

The Cardinals successfully established themselves as a winning team in the mid of 1920s. The team was led by Rogers Hornsby and under his leadership the team won a pennant in 1926. It was a remarkable victory and they gave a fabulous performance and swept their mighty opponents the New York Yankees in all of the seven games in the World Series that season. Finally the Cardinals lost out to the Philadelphia Athletics in World Series of 1930. They lost at a score of 4-2 but made a strong entry in the World Series in the next year. They played a strong defensive game that literally broke the back of all the strong teams. The Cardinals were going strong even during the early 70s. At that time the team was managed by Red Schoendienst.

The title of the National League was won by the Cardinals in 1987. They lost a total of 4 games to 3 in the World Series. After that the team was bought by a group in 1995. This new groups head was by people of the Southwest Bank. The renowned baseball executive Walt Jocketty was hired as their manager before they were sold out. The new management devised certain plans and made intelligent moves to make their team into a winning team. A baseball talent hunt was also conducted in this regard.

Their 1973 record held 89 losses and 73 victories and they came in the fourth place overall. One of their players hit 24 home runs in just 51 games. In the recent times, 2004 to be more precise this team recorded 105 in the Major League. This was their best since 1940s. They won the series at a score of 3-1.
