1967-now, St. Louis Blues; [NHL]

The St. Louis Blues were one of the National Hockey League expansion teams introduced in 1967. Originating from St. Louis, Missouri, the Blues played their first game against fellow expansion team, the Minnesota North Stars and that resulted in a 2-2 tie. Coach Scotty Bowman ensured an unforgettable performance for fans in the St. Louis Blues opening season. The team reached the Stanley Cup finals against all odds after defeating seasoned teams such as Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota North Stars in their first two rounds of the playoffs. Unfortunately they lost the finals to the aggressive Montreal Canadians to the disappointment of their fans.

The St. Louis Blues went through a number of changes in the next decade leading to inconsistent performance. Despite the above mentioned turbulence, the St. Louis Blues managed to reach the playoffs quite frequently. However, in the team missed the National Hockey League playoffs for three straight seasons in the mid-1970s. Frequently changing players combined with financial problems made the future of the team somewhat unsteady. The financial crutch was overcome with a cash infusion by Hal Dean that stabilized the books. The St. Louis Blue initiated a rebuilding effort in the 1976 Amateur Draft.

The St. Louis Blue’s general manager Emile Francis drafted Bernie Federko, Brian Sutter and Mike Liut, all of whom prove to be invaluable assets for the Blues team in the coming years. Even after drafting such powerful players, the Blues started the season by losing the first round of National Hockey League playoffs.

Although the team faced a blow when it lost Jacque Demers to the Detroit Red Wings, general manager Ron Caron was on his feet and drafted Brett Hull, Adam Oates, Scott Stevens, Brendan Shanahan, Al MacInnis and Curtis Joseph among others. Hull was the strongest hockey player in Calgary and was an unbeatable force when paired up with Adam Oates. The two were a combination so powerful it was rarely seen in the National Hockey League.

The St. Louis Blue’s hired Mike Keenan as coach and general manager in the mid-1990’s. Keenan’s appointment as coach made a noticeable impact on the team’s performance as the hard headed Keenan taught its players to be at their toes all the time. Keenan made an audacious move by drafting Wayne Gretzky for the 1995-96 stretch run since ‘The Great One’ had not come up to his fans’ expectations since Grant Fuhr was hurt in the final game of the regular season.

Hull quit the St. Louis Blues when he signed a sweet deal with the Dallas Stars as a free agent. Despite losing a vital player, the Blues continued to perform at their best thanks to exceptional players like MacInnis, Pronger, and Weight and made a franchise record by winning 51 games for 114 points along with their first Presidents’ Trophy title in club history. Despite a glorious season, the St. Louis Blues lost the postseason to San Jose sharks in a seven game, first round match up.
