This league later on came to be known as the American Football League (AFL). At the inception of AFL in 1960 it included several teams, one of which was also the Los Angeles Chargers. The other teams that were included were the Denver Broncos, the Dallas Texans, the Oakland Raiders, the New York Titans and Houston Oilers, Buffalo Bills and the Boston Patriots. The Chargers were relocated to San Diego in 1961 where they continued to play for almost nine more years in the AFL. They have the honor of appearing at five AFL playoffs five times and four AFL Championships. They became the AFL Championship in 1963 when they defeated the Boston Patriots at 51-10 in front of more than 30,127 fans at Balboa Stadium. They made their debut with a logo that showed an arc-shaped lightning bolt. Apart from that all through their history in the AFL, they have worn a shield logo also that has a horse head and the word "Chargers" inscribed on it. Earlier known as the Los Angeles Chargers, before the inclusion in the NFC as a charter member of the American Football League in 1960 they played their first season in Los Angeles before they were relocated to San Diego. The victory of the Chargers as the AFL champions came before they joined NFL according to the AFL-NFL Merger. They merged with the NFL post 1969 season. Seven of the playoff appearances and three championship appearances came after the inclusion in NFL. Post 1994 season, the Chargers faced at heavy defeat against opponents, the San Francisco 49ers in the 29th Super Bowl at a score of 49-26. Of their team members their coach and five of their players are highly ranked amongst the players included in the Football Hall of Fame. The wide receiver, quarterback, offensive lineman and tight end all have a place in the elite list. Presently they are included in the West Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). During 1960-1973, the teams’ uniform changed several times. Earlier as already mentioned the team wore a sky blue or a white jersey that included gold colored lightning bolts on the shoulders. The helmets were white and had a gold colored lightning bolt logo along with the player’s number. They changed the color of their pants from white to gold in 1966 and from sky blue to royal blue in 1974. The color of the helmets was also changed and the player's number was removed from it. Another change came when they used navy blue in combination to white pants in the mid of 80’s. Then a darker shade of blue was employed. Whereas the color of the lightning bolts on the jerseys and the helmets was white with a golden trimming. The addition of navy pants was made in 1990.
