Golf matches called the “Ryder Cup Matches” held amongst European and American teams award the winners with the Ryder Cup. These matches are co supervised by PGA of American and the PGA of European Tour.
The contest for this cup began in 1926 when an inauguration match was held amongst teams that were representing America and Britain. The venue was Wentworth Club in UK. The contest started in 1927 at the Worcester Country Club. a gold cup was donated by Ryder who awarded each player of the winning team with £5. To date this cup is held every two years except when it was cancelled because of the World War II.
The initial matches that were held amongst the two teams yielded even results but post World War II the US team marked it supremacy. Owing to these results the decision regarding the extension of the representation of the British & Irish teams to Europe was taken in 1979.
This modification was in consequence to the victories that were recorded by the Spanish golfers of that time. The list was headed by Severiano Ballesteros. Together with Antonio Garrido, he became the first Spaniard to appear in the 1979 event. From that time Europe is successfully represented by French, German, Italian and Swedish players.
Consequently it has provided more enjoyable matches, in which Europe has belted seven winning titles and the Ryder cup once in comparison to American that boasts six wins.
The teams competing for the Ryder Cup include twelve players from two teams. Presently eight foursome matches, eight four ball matches and twelve single matches are played. Each individual victory results in a point for the respective team, whereas a tie results in ½ a point.
The time period for the match spans above three days, mostly during Friday-Sunday. On Friday, four fourball and four foursome matches are held in the afternoon with a recap on Saturday. Twelve single matches follow on Sunday. The eight players playing in the Friday and Saturday matches are selected by the captain of the team.
Earlier since 1981 the sessions were opened with an alternate shot or foursomes until the 1997 session that was opened with fourballs by the European captain Seve Ballesteros. This change was temporary and the U.S. captain Ben Crenshaw reverted to the alternate shot in the 1999 session held in Brookline. Presently the Ryder Cup matches are opened with the better ball for the past three years.
The 2001 session faced a delay of one year owing to the 9/11 attacks. This change resulted in the decision of holding the Ryder Cup in even numbered years as opposed to the odd numbered years.
However the billboards at The Belfry where the 2002 Ryder Cup was held still read The 2001 Ryder Cup instead of the 2002 Ryder Cup. The American captain also intentionally referred to his US team as "The 2001 Ryder Cup Team" in the speech that he gave at the closing ceremony. Europe recorded a hat-trick of Ryder Cups starting in 2002. It came as a surprise since the European players failed to record individual victories.
The Ryder Cup is trophy that is given to the winner of a golf tournament that is held every two years amongst European and American teams. Its original donator was Samuel Ryder. The matches that are held for this prestigious cup are known as the "Ryder Cup Matches". The event is mutually governed by PGA of America and the PGA European Tour.
A demonstrative match was held in 1926 amongst a representative professional American team against a representative professional English team held at the venue of the Wentworth Club in UK. Post this warm up match the debut of the Ryder cup took place whose inauguration match was held the following year. The format of the matches includes two teams of a dozen players each. Each win scores one point for the team whereas a tie results in half a point each.
The initial matches amongst both sides led to almost equal wins for both but post Second World War, US teams marked their supremacy. This dominance resulted in the decision of extension of teams to Europe in the year 1979. It resulted in the inclusion of several talented Spanish golfers such as Severiano Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido. Since then European team has been successfully represented by several talented French, German, Italian and Swedish golfers and has managed to record seven wins and a title.
To qualify for the US team, four of the major championships have to be contested, that started in 2007 and will carry on till august of the present year.
It will lead to automatic qualification of the first eight players for the US Ryder Cup Team of 2008. The places left unfilled will be filled with golfers of the captains’ choice in September. After accusations of unethical behavior being flung during The Belfry in 1989, the differences between Seve Ballesteros and Paul Azinger sky rocketed during 1991 which led to the intensification of the desire to emerge victorious.
The resulted pairing is viewed amongst best pairs of all times. The Ryder Cup that took place in 1999 at the venue of Brookline was the cause of great debate. The American team made an astonishing comeback and propelled the U.S. team into a win at the score of 14.5-13.5. They managed a single match win that has been their first ever since the early nineties.
The air of misunderstanding between the two sides did not clear even after the matches had ended. An American player named Sam Torrance identified the behavior as "disgusting," whereas the European captain made a reference to it as a "bear pit" in a book that followed in the later years. There was considerable talk of his wife being spat at by an onlooker. Post the 1999 Ryder Cup, several members of the U.S. team extended an apology for their behavior and several tries were made to normalize the situation between people of both countries. The efforts proved fruitful and had a positive influence on the matches that followed in the later years.
