1967-now, Pittsburgh Penguins; [NHL]

The Pittsburgh Penguins were one of the teams that were included in the National Hockey League in the expansion of 1967. Unfortunately, their first year on the league was not that memorable as they finished fifth in the western division and did not make it to the playoffs. One year into the league, ownership issues sprung up while the Pittsburgh Penguins were playing for the first time in postseason in their third year. They finished second in their division qualifying for the National Hockey League playoffs. However, St Louis Blues sent them packing in the semi finals. Despite undergoing another change in ownership, the Pittsburgh Penguins made it to the playoffs in the 1971, only to be defeated by the Chicago Black Hawks.

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ inconsistent performance throughout the 1970’s was a disappointment for their fans. This is evident from the fact that they missed out two consecutive National Hockey League playoffs in 1971-72 and 1972-1973 seasons. They emerged as a strong team in the 1974-75 season, finishing third in the Norris division. The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated St Louis Blue and New York Islanders respectively. However, the New York Islanders made an impressive comeback and tied the series to win it by 1-0 shutout eventually in the seventh game of the series.

The Pittsburgh Penguins made it to the National Hockey League playoffs in the 1980, 1981 and 1982 seasons only to be beaten up in the first round. The 1983-83 was one of the worst seasons in the team’s history as it finished in the last place in the National Hockey League. Consequently, they drafted Mario Lemieux as their first overall pick in the 1984 National Hockey League entry draft. Lemieux was a promising player and went on to score 100 points in his first year and won the Calder trophy as the best National Hockey League rookie.

Lemieux inclusion in the team made a significant impact and the Pittsburgh Penguins finished first in the Patrick division during the 1990-91 season. It was the beginning of a glorious era for the Pittsburgh Penguins as they would win two consecutive Stanley Cups in the next two years. Working hard to maintain their superior performance, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated Minnesota North Stars in a six game series to claim their first ever Stanley Cup championship. The championship reasserted Lemieux’s role in the team as he won the Conn Smythe trophy for most valuable player in the playoffs. The team defeated their arch rival the Chicago Blackhawks in four straight games winning their second straight Stanley Cup championship.

Although Lemieux was still the most envied player in the National Hockey League back problems were hindering his performance. He took the subsequent season (i.e. 1994) off to give his back injury ample time to heal. His departure was a blow to the team resulting in them losing the next two Stanley Cup championships with a wide margin. Although the team tried its best to achieve the pre- Lemieux performance, it seemed impossible in the super star’s absence.
