Founded: 1972 Location: Glendale, Arizona Stadium: Jobing.com Arena Conference: Western Conference Division: Pacific Division Coyotes History 1996-now, Phoenix Coyotes; [NHL] 1979-1996, Winnipeg Jets; [NHL] 1972-1978, Winnipeg Jets; [WHA] The Phoenix Coyotes were introduced at national level in Arizona in 1996 despite the fact that it has a much longer and impressive history in professional hockey. The team came into being as the Winnipeg Jets, a franchise conceived in 1967 in the Western Canada Junior Hockey League. The owner Ben Hatskin joined the World Hockey Association in 1971, and had an impressive track record including super star Bobby Hull and three championships under his belt. Hatskin decided to join the National Hockey League in the 1979 expansion because of the problems prevailing at the World Hockey League. Winnipeg Jets lost their first game to Pittsburg Penguins with a score of 4-2. Their performance in the first season of National Hockey League was typical of any expansion team. Things did not change much in the second year when they finished with the worst record for the 1980-81 season and drafted Dale Hawerchuck with their first overall pick as a result of their poor performance. Hawerchuck was an impressive junior player and quickly gained the same respect and reputation for excellent play in the National Hockey League. This is evident from the fact that he lifted the Calder trophy as the best rookie, scoring 45 goals and adding 58 assists for a lofty 103 points. However, the team star was traded with Buffalo Sabres for star defenseman Phil Housley in 1991. This acquisition marked the beginning of the downfall of the Winnipeg Jets. The team stumbled through the next few seasons facing problems in signing and retaining young players, hasty trades, front office issues, and the growing financial troubles of the management. Despite efforts of various groups and governments to help the team improve its performance, it was sold to Richard Burke and Steven Gluckstern after around 1400 games. The acquisition was followed by the move to Phoenix, Arizona and brand revitalization by changing their name to the Phoenix Coyotes. Don Hayes was the first coach of the Phoenix Coyotes in National Hockey League. The team finished at .500 in their inaugural season and faced the impressive Anaheim Mighty Ducks team in the first round of the 1996-97 playoffs. The team’s performance continued to improve after its first season. The young players drafted by ex-Jets general manager Mike Smith were budding out to be aggressive players. Four Phoenix Coyotes inclduing Nikolai Khabibulin, Teppo Numminen, Jeremy Roenick and Keith Tkachuk represented the team in the All-Star National Hockey League game in 1999. Nikolai Khabibulin, the star player of Phoenix Coyotes, moved to the Tampa Bay Lightning because of a contract dispute in the next season. Jeremy Roenick followed suit and joined Philadelphia Flyers as a free agent after quitting the team. Keith Tkachuk left the Phoenix Coyotes to join the upcoming St Louis Blues team. This departure of some of the most seasoned and outstanding players of the team was a major blow. Consequently, the Phoenix Coyotes signed Tony Amonte to a multi-year deal only to trade him with the Philadelphia Flyers. We have a minimum service charges on Phoenix Coyotes tickets.
