After five decades of the Ottawa Senators’ departure from Ottawa, Bruce Firestone, Cyril Leeder and Randy Sexton initiated efforts to bring a National Hockey League franchise to the Canadian capital. Despite uncertain financial stability of the trio, the fact that they had access to land in the Ottawa suburb Kanat resulted in the National Hockey League awarding a team to Ottawa and the Ottawa Senators played their first season in 1992. The team’s performance consistently improved as Alexi Yashin and Alexander Daigle proved to be a lethal combination for the team’s opponents and resulted in the team finishing its second season with 37 points. Despite significant improvements in the team’s performance, contract standoffs of Alexi Yashin and Bryan Berard created inconsistency leading it to finish out of the playoff run in the lockout shortened season. The 1995-96 season saw a myriad of changes in the team as Yashin left for Russia and Anaheim Mighty Ducks’ assistant, Pierre Gauthier, was hired as the Ottawa Senators’ general manager. The Ottawa Senators made a comeback in the 1996-97 season with a 31-36-15 record with 77 points. They defeated the Buffalo Sabres in the first round of playoffs and made it to the postseason after around 60 years. Although the team had a 3-2 lead in the series, the Buffalo Sabres bounced back and forced the Ottawa Senators out of the season with two consecutive losses. They took on the New Jersey Devils in the first round of the next playoffs season and claimed the top spot in a six game series. However, the fan’s excitement was short lived as the team lost the second round five game series to Washington Capitals. The 1999-2000 season was an improved on the Ottawa Senators’ track record as the team finished first place in their division. In the 2000-01 draft season, Yashin was traded with the New York Islanders for Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt and their first round pick, which the Ottawa Senators used to draft Jason Spezza. The Ottawa Senators finished the season with a 39-27-9-7 record, landing in the third spot in their division. However, the New Jersey Devils claimed the Stanley Cup after defeating the Ottawa Senators in a cut throat seven game set.
