Matt Snell and Joe Namath were named the rookies of the year in 1964 and 1965 respectively. At that time Ewbank was the coach, Maynard was the receiver and Namath was the star quarterback. In 1970 the New York Jets became members of the NFL after the AFL and NFL merger. They managed to reach the playoffs four times from 1981 to 1986 after several matches with many strong teams. Despite its star players at that time the team managed to win only one second place amongst the first 11 seasons that it played in the league. They made consecutive playoff appearances in 1981 and 1982. The 1981 Jets team led the NFL in quarterback sacks. Their players Gastineau and Klecko performed remarkably well. The New York Jets managed to make it to the AFC Championship Game in the 1982 but were badly defeated by the Miami Dolphins at 14-0. The defensive of the Jets came to be known as the New York Sack Exchange owing to the placement of the stock exchange in New York City. They displayed infrequent performances during the end of 1980s and the start of 1990s. Some of the lead players included in their team were McNeil, quarterback Ken O’Brien and Al Toon, who was the reciever. A new Quarterback joined them in 1993 but the franchise encountered repetive losses. They placed last in the 1996 division. The team underwent a remarkable change under the new coach and finished with a 9-7 record. They almost made it to the playoffs. In 1998 they earned the Eastern Division title.
