Founded: 1988 Location: Nashville, Tennessee Stadium: Sommet Center Conference: Western Conference 1998-now, Nashville Predators; [NHL] Nashville Predators, an expansion franchise owned by Leipold Hockey Holdings LLC, were launched in the National Hockey League in the 1998-99 season after making it to the league in 1997. “Predators” was the name of choice of the both the majority owner and president of Leipold Hockey Holdings LLC, Jack Diller and Craig Leipold respectively. The team logo, a sabre-toothed tiger, was native to the Nashville Arena, the area where the Nashville Predators were scheduled to play. The mascot of Nashville Predators is called Gnash, a blue saber-toothed cat, has set high standards for entertainment in National Hockey League. He is popular in fans for his amazing stunts including breath taking pendulum swings under the score board with his feet reaching the ice. Barry Trotz was recruited as the team’s first coach along with David Poile who had also served as Washington Capitals general manager. The selection of legendary Ontario Hockey League player David Legwand in 1998 amateur entry draft marked the beginning of the Nashville Predators’ team building efforts. The team made franchise history by defeating the Carolina Hurricanes in 1998. However, they would complete their first season with a 28-47-7 record for 63 points claiming the last spot in Central Division. Although the team improved remarkably in second season and exhibited superior strategy and play, they once again finished last in the Central division and out of the postseason with a record of 28-47-7-7. This disappointed their fans once again. The Nashville Predators gave their best performance to date in the 2000-01 season with a 34-34-9-3 record. Unfortunately, they did not make the Stanley Cup playoff berth despite the fact that it was the team’s best season ever. The next season was again disappointing for the Predators fans because the team fell below .500 in the regular season because of their unpredictable performance. Although they reached the playoffs after a few months of excellent play, losing fifteen games in a row resulted in the team with a of 27-35-13-7 record gaining the team a reputation of exhibiting inconsistent performance. Nashville Predators lost eighteen of the first twenty games in the 2002-03 season leading to various welcome alterations in the team including the move of legendary goaltender Mike Dunham to the New York Rangers. Despite various moves during two consecutive seasons, the team’s performance remained unpredictable. The team lost several talented members including Andy Delmore and Cale Hulse who moved to Buffalo Sabres and Phoenix Coyotes respectively. Similarly, Bill Houlder was not signed as a free agent by the Nashville Predators. This resulted in induction of more amateur and inexperienced players in the team impacting its performance. Nashville Predators has a loyal fan following that is cashed upon by the team’s front office. A large banner adorns the wall of the front office along with a website where fans can access the latest information about players, the team’s upcoming games and chants customized for opponents the predators will take on.
