Canadiens History

1917-now, Montreal Canadiens; [NHL]
1910-1916, Montreal Canadiens; [Ind]
1909-1910, Haileybury Aeros; [NHA]

In the winters of early 1900 two Ottawa’s named Ambrose O'Brien and Jack Laviolette, set up a hockey Club and named it the Canadian. They played their inaugural game in the year 1910 in the National Hockey Association, but it was not until six years that they managed to bag a Stanley Cup championship against opponents the Portland Rosebuds that were a member of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association.

This club was amongst the four inventive clubs that became a member of the National Hockey League, when it was established in 1917. Originally known as the Athlétique Canadian’s they renamed themselves as the Club de Hockey Canadien. They continued to perform well and made numerous Stanley Cup appearances all along. They bagged their second Stanley cup in 1930 against opponents the Boston Bruins. They went on to defeat the Chicago Black hawks in a five game series that was held the following year.

While the Canadians were unable to win the cups, the Maroons were basking in glory. But owing to the Depression of the late thirties, and Montreal’s inability to sustain two NHL teams, the Maroons were put up for sale.

Several changes were made later. In 1946 Frank Selke joined them and built an extraordinary system that sustained this franchise for many years to come. They performed remarkably well according to the new system and the team featured several Hall of Famers’. They showed impressive play in 1953 and emerged victorious against the Boston Bruins to win the Stanley cup. History repeated itself after three years, when they won yet again, this time against the Detroit Red Wings, in a series of five games.

They performed yet another remarkable feat in the second half of the seventies when they out an end to the target of the "Broad Street Bullies" from Philadelphia. The Canadians defeated them in addition to the Buffalo Sabres and the New York Islanders, to manage four consecutive Stanley Cups. They managed to field triumphant teams and made the playoffs several times during the eighties. Along with a Stanley Cup appearance in the year 1986, led by the talented rookie goaltender named Patrick Roy.

But they were faced with a very weird situation soon after their recent victory. They were unable to play the playoffs during the 1994-95 season, which led to numerous changes overall including the trade off of their player Patrick Roy. The following year they were relocated to the popular Montreal Forum and later to the downtown facility named the Molson Center (that was later renamed the Bell Center). Later in the end of the nineties, although the team managed several playoff appearances but they failed to make it anywhere close to the Stanley Cup form that they had displayed I the past.

Since then to present things have not been going very well for the once remarkable team. They missed the playoffs for a couple of years before they made a comeback in the year 2002. They managed to win against Boston but lost put to the Carolina.
