They were dominant in all parts of the games in the Super Bowl IV. Carl Peterson was appointed as the President and the General Manager in the year 1989. He nominated Schottenheimer as the coach for the Chiefs. The team performed exceptionally well under him and marked six consecutive playoff appearances and three AFC Western championships. They recorded a total of nine winning seasons and owing to a very strong fan base they had 76 straight sold out games. They were amongst the most successful teams in 1990 under Schottenheimer's leadership who averaged .634 with a splendid record of 101-58-1. With a strong fan base and a "college football game atmosphere" they became increasingly popular. Much of the college atmosphere popularity can be attributed to the college football games that are played at the Arrowhead Stadium and also to the recruitment of several college players al through the nineties. They have upheld this tradition to date. They made seven playoff appearances in eight seasons but managed to emerge victorious only in three of these playoff games. Dick Vermeil, an ex coach for the St. Louis Rams became the new head coach for the team in 2001. He managed to bring several elements of "The Greatest Show" to the Kansas City's offense. They posted a record of 7-9 in the 2004 season. As a result the 2005 season saw the recruitment of many new players that were included in the defense that had been a weak area of the team for the past three years. They won ten continuous games but could not reach the playoffs. They became the fourth team ever in NFL with over ten wins that failed to make it to the playoffs.
