The team that had several star players, some of them future hall of famers’, was coached by Buddy Parker and George Wilson. They went through a bad patch during 1960-1980. However the early 90’s saw the assembling of a strong Detroit team that made four playoff appearances all through 1991-1995. Wayne Fontes was the coach. Their running back has the honor of recording nine straight 1000-yard seasons for his team from 1989-1997. Its history can be traced to a team that was located in Ohio and that made its entry in the NFL in 1930. This Spartan team played in the postseason game and lost at a score of 9-0 against opponents Chicago Bears. It was sold in 1934 and was relocated to Detroit and renamed the Lions by its new owners. They remained in the bottom during the early 1940’s despite an exceptional performance by Byron White who not only topped the league in rushing, but also led them to scoring. Two years they lost all the games of the 1942 season and had only 38 points under their belt. They made a comeback to the postseason in 1952 where they emerged victorious. They defeated the Cleveland Browns, who were a powerful team of the Eastern division, twice to win the league championship. They won their third league championship under the coach George Wilson in 1957 against opponents Cleveland at a score of more than 45 points. Post 1958 till 1981 they managed only one postseason appearance that took place in 1970. Several of their players gave individual impressive performances during this period. These prominent players were Lem Barney, Dick Lane also known as the night train, Alex Karras and Pat Studstill. They were relocated in 1975 to the Silverdome which is the airiest dome in the entire world. They recorded their first win ever in almost eight years in 1980. Their head coach of the time led them to a postseason appearance in 1991 and posted a winning record with 12 games. They even played in their first ever NFC Championship Game. This tremendous performance by the team earned Fontes the award for the coach of the year. Their offense during the 1990’s won them five rushing titles during 1989-1997. They made it to the playoffs thrice but lost in the first rounds every year. After Fontes replacement owing to the teams’ poor performance in 1996 season, the team was coached by Bobby Ross.
