Further the European Tour has gained recognition as an official event ever since its first season in the early seventies. During 1860-1870 this event has been organized by the Prestwick Golf Club who also take part in it. Ever since its revival in 1872, the courses have been rotated regularly. In addition to the initial three courses that were rotated amongst; the Prestwick, St Andrews and Musselburgh in 1893 Royal St George's and Royal Liverpool Golf Club and Hoylake were extended invitations. A few more clubs have joined them since. The field for this tournament is 156 and the golfers are included based on three conditions. Two third of the field is made up of lead players who have gained successful exemptions. The remaining field comprises of players who have gained successful "Local Qualifying" and "International Qualifying". Other than in the UK, the tournament is known as the "British Open" in order to make it different from the other tournaments with their open formats that are held regarding this sport. Commonly the countries that stage similar 'open' format tournaments name only the tournaments held in their own country as an event that is “open", whereas the PGA Tour makes a reference to the tournament as the British Open, much like several other media outlets in the US.
