The Open Championship or sometimes commonly referred to as The Open or the British Open is amongst the oldest of the total four chief championships that are held in the sport of golf.

It is always held out of USA and is managed by R&A that overlooks the golf affairs out of U.S., Canada and Mexico. It is usually played on the last weekend in the month of July. This popular event takes place annually and is amongst the nine historic links that take place across the courses in UK. Earlier the Open prize money given has been the highest amongst the prize money of all the major golf tournaments since the year 2002. It is the only major championship that involves four hole playoff for the players with the possibility of the achievement of a death hole if the players fail to score after four holes.

The Open Championship made its debut in October of 1860 at the venue of Prestwick Golf Club. After the inauguration earlier only pros were allowed to take part. It included a field of eight on a course that is distributed over twelve holes. Willie Park Senior emerged victorious with a score of 174. In the next year even the amateurs were allowed to participate. It is an official event on the PGA calendar and has been ever since 1995. Additionally all the other Open Championships that were held before 1995 are also classified as a PGA Tour win and this fact is reflected by the number of PGA winners.

Further the European Tour has gained recognition as an official event ever since its first season in the early seventies. During 1860-1870 this event has been organized by the Prestwick Golf Club who also take part in it. Ever since its revival in 1872, the courses have been rotated regularly. In addition to the initial three courses that were rotated amongst; the Prestwick, St Andrews and Musselburgh in 1893 Royal St George's and Royal Liverpool Golf Club and Hoylake were extended invitations. A few more clubs have joined them since.

The field for this tournament is 156 and the golfers are included based on three conditions. Two third of the field is made up of lead players who have gained successful exemptions. The remaining field comprises of players who have gained successful "Local Qualifying" and "International Qualifying".

Other than in the UK, the tournament is known as the "British Open" in order to make it different from the other tournaments with their open formats that are held regarding this sport. Commonly the countries that stage similar 'open' format tournaments name only the tournaments held in their own country as an event that is “open", whereas the PGA Tour makes a reference to the tournament as the British Open, much like several other media outlets in the US.
