After the league’s realignment plan, which took affect in 2002, the Falcons were relocated to the South Division of the NFC. They play at the Georgia Dome wearing black, red, silver and white colored uniforms. The team was named after a contest winning letter that had been authored by a schoolteacher. It portrayed the falcon as a proud and dignified, creature that has strong sporting tradition. The Falcons’ were awarded the status of an NFL franchise for the 1966 season. Norb Hecker provided his services of head coach. They used their first draft pick to choose Tommy Nobis who was a linebacker and had bagged the 1966 NFL rookie of the year title. The team featured several top players during the late 1960s and the early 1970s. Some of the more prominent ones were Nobis, Claude Humphrey and the offensive tackle George Kunz. The team struggled on the whole but several of its players gave exceptional individual performances. The highlight was Dave Hampton and Steve Bartkowski who were the running back and the quarterback respectively. The team posted a poor record of 4-10 during 1975 and 1976. However they showed a marked improvement in the late 1970’s. Their then coach guided them to a season record of 7-7 record in 1977. They featured a strong defense that boasted of players such as Humphrey and Lawrence. They were playoff debutants in the 1978 after they posted a 9-7 record. They entered the playoffs on a wild card and had a good start after they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles. But post the Philadelphia game they lost out to the Dallas Cowboys, who were the eventual champions in that year. They regained top form in 1980 and won the Western Division. Unfortunately they were defeated by the Cowboys yet again in the second round of the playoff. It was not until another two years that the team returned to the playoffs owing to exceptional performances by Gerald Riggs and Jeff Van. They posted continuous defeats during 1983-1990. Several coaches were changed until the 1991 change that led them into the playoffs as a result of a wild card berth. The revived offense included Chris Miller, Michael Haynes and Andre Rison. Haynes’s averaged an impressive 22.4 yards per catch and played a significant role in leading the NFL. The following year the team posted a wining record of 9-7. They made it to the playoffs but lost in the very first round to opponents Green Bay Packers. However they displayed a disappointing performance in 1996 when they posted a record of 3-13. Post 96 season, Dan Reeves took charge as the head coach. They posted an impressive record of 14-2 in 1998 and also bagged the NFC Western Division title.
